The natural environment is the main reason why Zagori has become a popular destination. Away from the major urban centers, the massif of Tymfi has remained an unaffected natural environment, a geological and ecological paradise.
Vikos Gorge, Drakolimni of Tymfi and Voidomatis River are some of the most important spots of natural beauty in Zagori region. Vikos-Aoos National Park, in which the area belongs, is also known as “Forest of large peaks”.
According to scientific studies, the particular soil and climate conditions, over time, have created a very large number of approximately 2000 different plant species. It is refuge for more than 1,700 species of plants and herbs. Endemic rare plants that grow in the region attract scientists from all over the world. The flora includes deciduous and coniferous forests with various tree species, while the fauna includes 24 species of mammals, many of which are endangered: bears, wolves, deer, wild goats, lynx.
There is also a large number of wild flowers, some of which are very rare. Besides the rich flora, a significant number of mushrooms grow in the region from spring to early summer and autumn in deciduous and coniferous forests, while some of them belong to the finest edible species.
