History

Zagori covers an area of more than 1,000 square kilometers. At an altitude ranging from 500-2500 meters. It is a region gifted with rare natural beauty. The historical circumstances formed a special cultural environment, where the multiplicity of small communities does not negate the unity of the whole. This emerges as a monument of cultural heritage. It consists of 46 villages, called Zagorohoria, which are scattered in the Mountains of Pindos, Tymfi and Mitsikeli.

They are located north of the city of Ioannina. Zagori is divided into three geographical sections: West, East and Central Zagori. It is of great geological importance and for this reason it is part of the Vikos-Aoos National Park. Due to the location of the region, the climate and the particular topography, it is characterized as Vikos-Aoos Geopark and is included in the European Geoparks Network of UNESCO and belongs to Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

The stone arched bridges, the stone alleys lead to mesohori (halfway the village), where the square of each village is, where under the shade of plane trees almost all of the events take place. To get acquainted with Zagori you must walk, climb up, look far away, get lost in the cobbled alleys, smell the old smells, observe the colours and the change of the seasons.
